Update on Unemployment

Kevin Comer here, a business lawyer collecting economic and legal updates on the Covid 19 crisis. The latest unemployment numbers are devastating with 3.3 million people filing last week, according to the Washington Post. Here in Florida, 74,000 people filed, and there are many complaints about the online system being down.

I encourage you to attempt to access the state’s website in the evening or late at night, when volumes are down. We’ve heard stories about this working. Please continue trying — the new federal benefits will be paid through the state unemployment system.

Apply here for Florida state unemployment benefits.

These are the benefits that Congress has approved:

  • A payment of $1,200 per adult plus $500 per child, as long as you are making less than $75,000

  • Freelancers and Contractors are now eligible for unemployment benefits

  • $600 per week + state unemployment benefits, to provisionally last for four months

These are just the basics. It is important to file for unemployment, no matter how annoying the website is being. Thanks for reading the Report. Stay well and informed!

Sincerely,

Comer Law
