Check on Your Stimulus Check

The $1200 per person stimulus checks have been going out for a few weeks now under the new CARES Act. The paper checks are being mailed and many people have already received direct deposit into their accounts. However, there are still many issues with the program. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website is having a lot of technical errors, and there are difficulties with people who used a tax preparer or TurboTax to do their 2018 and 2019 taxes. Those checks may be delayed for weeks.

We spoke with Congressman Mike Bilirakis, who represents North Pinellas County of Florida, and this is what he told us:

  • “In today’s briefing with the IRS, I was told that the IRS portal is currently being refined and that by Tuesday the updated portal should fix the ‘payment status not available’ and the ‘cannot verify eligibility’ error messages that many people are receiving. In order to facilitate these improvements, the system will be down from 10 pm to 1 am Thursday  through Sunday. Those who have yet to receive payment can check daily to see if their information has been updated in the system.”

Here’s how you can track your IRS payment:

  1. Head to the IRS Get My Payment page and tap the blue Get My Payment button to check the status of your economic impact payment.

  2. On the next page about authorized use, tap OK.

  3. Now on the Get My Payment page, enter your social security number (SSN) or individual tax ID (ITIN), your date of birth, your street address and your ZIP or postal code. Tap Continue.

  4. On the next page, the portal will show your payment status, whether it's been scheduled or if the service can't yet determine your status. If you've not set up direct deposit with the IRS, the service may walk you through those steps to get your check sent straight to your bank account.
